On 12th, Ministry of Justice announced test operation of automated immigration service for foreigners coming to Jeju Island from 13th.

Automated immigration service enables travelers’ convenient immigration clearance by verifying personal information using advanced information technology.

The service targets Koreans and foreign investors, expatriates, and professionals aged 17 and over. As of last month, total 1,241,356 travelers have registered with 1,238,047 Koreans and 3,309 foreigners.

As a part of a strategy to attract foreign tourists, Ministry of Justice also increased the range of those who can use the service and simplified the process so that no registration of headshot, fingerprint, and passport information is required in advance.

According to the Ministry, only 17,324,334 travelers used automated immigration service from June 2008 to April 2013 and it accounted for just 8.3% of total number of people who moved in and out of Korea. Particularly, only 268,565 foreigners used the service reaching 1.55% of total users.

Ministry of Justice plans to operate 57 automated immigration checks in total, by installing two additional checks at Gimpo Airport, three at Gimhae airport, and four at Jeju Airport by the end of this month.

Dong-min Jeong, Commissioner of Korea Immigration Service will visit Jeju International Airport on 13th to check on automated immigration service operation.
