Jeju Organizes Global Environment Advisory Group

Jeju city plans to organize a global environment advisory group August 1st, which will give advices and suggestions for Jeju’s environment policies at a global perspective.

The group will consist of 12 Korean experts and 13 foreign experts, and its number will be expanded to 50. The term of office is two years until July 31, 2015.

Experts from the international organizations including the International Union for Conservation of Nature, United Nations Environment Programme, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and Ramsar Secretariat, Korean environment research agencies and Korean and foreign professors will participate in the advisory group.

It will give advices and suggestions for Jeju’s key environment policies, including measures to build the world’s environmental capital, implement the Jeju Declaration, conserve biodiversity and manage environment for well-being of Jeju citizens.

The advisory group will also play a role in promoting Jeju to the world, which was named the world’s seven new wonders.

A Jeju official noted that the global advisory group will serve as an opportunity to make Jeju a global environmental capital to become a role model for other cities in protecting environment.
