Jeju announced last week that it will designate and foster seven must-east Jeju foods.

Based on recommendations by an advisory group on Jeju’s traditional food, Jeju will conduct a survey to traditional food experts to select 50 types of foods out of 400 next month.

Through on- and off-line surveys and polls to local residents, Korean and foreign tourists and experts, seven finalists will be selected by the end of the year.

When the foods are selected, related traditional menus, standard recipes and stories will be developed and sold at traditional restaurants and franchises.

Also the city will develop menus that targeting Korean and foreign tourists, participate in food expositions and foster specialists to focus on transmission, protection and development of traditional food.

Oh Jung-hoon, a Jeju official for tourism policies, noted that Jeju’s fermented foods are outstanding well-being foods, adding that traditional foods those developed to suit tourists’ taste will become a new tourism product.
