According to Yonhap News,

(SEOUL = Yonhap News) The number of visitors of Jeju International Airport topped 2 million for the first time, Korea Airports Corporation announced on December 30, 2013.

KAC planned to present a “2,000 km free airline ticket” to the two millionth visitor.

Since its opening in 1968, the number of visitors to the airport rose from 7.2 million in 1993 to 9.82 million in 1997, but competitive pressure due to the increase in cheaper tourist attractions in Southeast Asia and the 1997 monetary crisis have brought down the number to 7.47 million in 1998.

Since then, Jeju offered its distinctive tourist attractions such as Olle Roads, and the number of visitors has steadily increased for the last 15 years.

During the last five years, in particular, the domestic visitors have grown more than 5 million and overseas tourists from China also have grown almost sixfold.

“In spite of almost insurmountable obstacles, Jeju International Airport now enjoys a renaissance. KAC will actively bring in policies to support Jeju to strengthen its competitiveness and meet the dramatically increasing international flight demands,” said Kim Seok-ki, President of KAC.
