(JEJU = Newsis) Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced on March 9 that it secured a total of KRW 5.7 billion national budget for modernizing and improving conditions of traditional markets in the province.

It will also receive a KRW 400 million support from the government as the province’s Seomun Market and Jeju Traditional Oil Market were designated as the “culture and tourism promotion market” by the government.

Jeju plans to use the budget to expand parking spaces and improve overall conditions of 28 traditional markets in the province to provide more comfortable and convenient shopping environment to local residents and tourists.

Also, increasing numbers of cruise tourists and young visitors encouraged the province to develop a smartphone application that introduces and provides information about traditional markets.

This year, the local government will push ahead with its plan to increase the average daily sales of local traditional markets by more than 10 percent.
