Jeju Sees Rapid Growth in Number of Cruise Tourists

(JEJU = Yonhap News) The number of cruise passengers visiting Jeju Island topped 60,000 in the first half of 2014.

According to the province on April 2, 29 international cruises visited Jeju during the first half, up 2.6 times from the same period last year. The first cruise ship to visit Jeju Island was Costa Atlantica, an Italian cruise which departed Shanghai, China on January 2 with more than 2,000 passengers on board.

The total number of cruise passengers visiting Jeju in the first half was 62,728, up by 4.2 times compared to the same period last year.

Cruise ships departing from Japan are scheduled to stop by Jeju Island starting from this month, which will dramatically increase the number of Japanese tourists visiting Jeju.

The first cruise ship from Japan will be a Dutch cruise ship, which carried 1,250 Japanese tourists and entered the Jeju Port on April 3.

The province anticipates that 13 cruise ships will touch the Jeju Port for 250 times this year, and more than 500,000 passengers, which is up by 29.5 percent from an year earlier, will visit the island during the same period.

The province is set to enhance its marketing activities to attract more Japanese tourists.
