JEJU Expands Community Service Program

(JEJU=NEWSIS) The City of Jeju, this year, has invested KRW 4.8 billion in community service and offered its citizens tailored welfare services.

Jeju announced on May 20 that 70 percent of the budget required for the welfare service was funded by the central government and the city plans to provide local residents with various services that fit regional characteristics by means of using electronic vouchers. So the service now is often called as ‘Voucher Business”.

Last year, the City of Jeju invested KRW 4 billion in 13 businesses and supported a total of 8,098 residents. And even 630 jobs were created.

This year, Jeju invested KRW 4.8 billion, 0.8 billion up from last year, in 17 business. In addition to the ongoing 13 businesses, the city has expanded its social welfare programs to 17 businesses. Mental health service for adults, family support programs, rehabilitation service for the handicapped via music therapy and total care service for the expecting mothers are newly added.

The number of organizations providing services to local residents increased to 115, 21 agencies (22 percent increase) up from 94 last year. So now citizens can choose one of them and ask for help.

“Expansion in social welfare services will greatly benefit our citizens and also increased organizations mean more jobs. So now the city expects that it can go for the effect of killing two birds with one stone. ”a city official said.
