(JEJU=NEWSIS) Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced on July 6 that it will spend KRW 10 billion in the Horse Industry Special Zone from the 2nd half of the year following the finalized budget enforcement plan on the Special Zone by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA).

Jeju Island was designated as the country’s only Horse Industry Special Zone last year.

Jeju Island has established an action plan in which KRW 11.4 billion including KRW 5.65 billion of livestock development fund is invested in 15 projects. The government approved 9 of them and an investment of KRW 10 billion.

The approved projects include constructing an eco-friendly horse riding track (KRW 1 billion), expanding the education infrastructure on horses (KRW 1 billion), adopting best horse breeds (KRW 1 billion), building a horse training & horse riding center (KRW 2 billion) and breeding and preserving bloodlines of Jeju horses (KRW 500 million).

Other projects include building a quarantine station for exporting domestic racehorses (KRW 1 billion), vitalizing the operation of equestrian facility (KRW 500 million), expanding horse breeding infrastructure (KRW 2 billion) and supporting production facility of bulk feed for horses (KRW 1 billion).

Projects that failed to receive approval from the government account for KRW 1.4 billion including adopting breeds for horse meat, establishing a horse hospital and equestrian competition hosted by MAFRA.

Jeju Island will instruct the action plans to the administration, producers and schools. The applications will be received until late this month and an evaluation group of experts will choose one of them and proceed with the plan.

The Province will receive applications from the village communities and farms for constructing an eco-friendly horse riding track. It will also establish a working group for eco-friendly horse riding track to promote the project annually.

Jeju Island will place the changed projects to the 1st revised supplementary budget.
