(SEOUL=Yonhap News) Jeju Air Co., South Korea's largest budget carrier, said Monday that it will double the number of Chinese cities it flies to starting in August as part of its ongoing efforts to increase its number of flights.

The company owned by Aekyung Industrial Co. said it will launch regular flight services to Jiamusi and Shijiazhuang on Aug. 8 and Aug. 22, respectively. The two new destinations will augment existing flights to Yantai and Qingdao.

"The increase comes after Jeju Air was allocated more international route rights by the transportation ministry in May," the company said in a press release.

Jiamusi in Heilongjiang Province in northeastern China is home to a large number of ethnic Koreans living in China, and Jeju Air has operated some 100 chartered flights to the city since 2012. Shijiazhuang in Hebei province is a popular tourist destination for South Korean sightseers wanting to see the various historical monuments and natural wonders of northern China.

Two weekly flights are planned for Shijiazhuang from Incheon International Airport, while one flight per week has been allocated to Jiamusi.

Jeju Air, which currently operates 16 B737-800 jets, also said it will increase weekly flights to Yanta and Qingdao, both located on the Shandong Peninsula.

Besides the four regular flight routes, the low cost carrier said it plans to provide irregular services to Nanjing, Wenzhou and Hefei in August and September, to meet a rise in passenger traffic.
