Wider Tourist Areas to Attract 3Mn Spenders to Gunsan City

(GUNSAN=Yonhap News) Following last year's record of 2.2mn visitors to tourist destinations that require an entrance fee, the City of Gunsan in North Jeolla Province is planning to attract 3mn spenders this year.

According to the city on Jan. 28, visitors to tourist destinations with admission fees was 2,209,114 in 2016, a 63% increase from the 1,355,561 visitors in the previous year.

By destination, the Gogunsan Islands welcomed around 1,055,000 visitors, a 127% rise from the previous year, after the partial opening of the new road connecting the islands to the mainland.

With the Modern History Museum at its center, the historical sites of old town Gunsan was also visited by 1mn or so tourists.

By registering modern history tours through the Public Procurement Service's online procurement system, the City was able to attract about 30,000 students to the old town.

About 15,000 tourists took the new inter-regional city tours connecting Gunsan with the adjacent Seocheon-gun, South Chungcheong Provice.

The City has decided to promote tourism this year primarily by widening its geographical scope, linking the old town historic district, the Gogunsan Islands, the ecological and cultural assets of neighboring Seocheon, as well as the cultural site of ancient Baekje (spread across Iksan, Buyeo and Gongju).

Through its new smartphone app Gunsan Modern Cultural Heritage Smart Tour, the City is providing information for touring the area, including maps and directions to famous attractions, culinary hotspots, and reliable lodging options.

Free Wi-fi service is provided in the historic district.

In preparation for the the complete opening of the road connecting the Gogunsan Islands to the mainland, the City is planning to expand convenience facilities on the islands and develop new tourist routes.

In consultation with neighboring cities and counties, the City plans to develop overnight packages and map out specific marketing plans.
