According to Yonhap News,

(GUNSAN=Yonhap News) Gunsan City, Jeonbuk, will develop the Bieungdo Military Base (48,000㎡) in efforts to build up its tourism infrastructure.

According to Gunsan on July 20, the city will hold a public bidding in September, to select preferred bidders for the construction of tourist facilities in the Bieungdo Military Base.

The military base boasts a wide sandy beach and outstanding views, perfect to build accommodations featuring sports facilities.

The base is also close to Saemangeum and 20 minutes from downtown.

In 2010, a company located in Saudi Arabia was planning to build a 47-story hotel in the military base, but decided not to.

The military base stationed in Bieungdo moved to Sinsido Island last July, leaving the base empty.

Gunsan City has been trying for years to attract a world-class hotel or leisure facility to the base, but could not find any willing firms.

The city stated, "Things are looking up these days because many companies who want to invest in tourist attraction development are inquiring about the military base. We expect to see the place develop into a business hotel or family-friendly condo that can be linked to nearby Saemangeum."

The city also added that investment conditions are good at the moment because of the ocean experience facility that is being built.

Applications and inquiries can be made to the city's Corporate Support Division. ☎ 063-454-2731.
