Fraunhofer IVV, one of four German research majors, will open its center in a fledgling food-related hotbed in Iksan, North Jeolla Province in South Korea, the country’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said Monday.

Fraunhofer is a state-funded research organization in Germany and the Fraunhofer-Institut für Verfahrenstechnik und Verpackung (Fraunhofer-Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging, IVV) focuses its research capabilities on food packaging. Fraunhofer IVV planning to hold a signboard hanging ceremony on Wednesday will support local food firms in developing food packaging technology and launch a Korea-Germany joint research project.

The Korea National Food Cluster located in Iksan is a research and development complex for the food industry, hosting 57 local and foreign food firms as well as research institutes. Among them, 16 have already set up manufacturing plants. “By attracting world’s renowned research centers, the food cluster would contribute to the development of domestic food industry,” said an official from the ministry. “We will continue to work hard to invite more overseas research institutes and food firms to enhance global competitiveness of the food cluster.”
