According to Yonhap News,

Jeonbuk-do announced on June 4 that it is to invest KRW 13.2 billion for job stabilization of workers who are in crisis due to a decline of the auto parts industry.

Specifically, it plans to create about 2,000 jobs by supporting around 400 companies.

It is because the closing down of Gunsan factory of GM Korea in 2018 pushed about 2,000 factory workers (including contract workers) and 10,000 in partnership companies lose jobs or poor working conditions.

In particular, Gunsan was designated as an employment crisis area for 4 years in a row as its main industries-car, shipbuilding-collapsed in the aftermath of shutdown of Hyundai Heavy Industries Gunsan Shipyard in 2017, followed by that of GM Korean Gunsan factory in 2018.

As a first step for employment security, Jenobuk-do is to receive applications for professional training and job conversion courses.

Currently, 12 innovative institutions in Jeonbuk-do are receiving applications to push for various projects such as enterprise support, startup support, training to nurture specialists in eco-friendly future vehicles, and job conversion support.

Jeonbuk Institute of Automotive Convergence Technology (JIAT) recruits auto parts companies which would receive support in product development and parts advancement and technology difficulties resolution; CAMTIC Advanced Mechatronics Technology Institute recruits companies which will receive support in logistics subsidy for diversification of trade, and entry to overseas market.

Jeonbuk Institute for Food-Bioindustry is to support technology development and commercialization of food and agriculture products, while Korea Electronics Technology Institute recruits those who will convert jobs to agricultural and food companies and establish business in smart farm area.
