According to Yonhap News,

Jeollabuk-do will foster the insect industry, which is in limelight as a future new industry.

The province announced on January 18 that it would invest KRW 1.9 billion to scale up the industry and establish classification system.

First of all, the province will invest KRW 400 million in modernizing breeding facilities to cut the production cost of existing farms.

Then, it will support KRW 500 million in establishing processing and distribution facilities that meet HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points: food safety management certification standards) standards.

It also plans to invest KRW 1 billion to support the industrialization of insects to prepare a mass production system, in order to expand production farms and create jobs.

The insect industry is attracting attention due to the emergence of production disruptions and supply chain problems in the world's meat processing companies caused by the COVID-19 situation.

The insects are called 'meat without slaughter' and regarded as an alternative food that meets eco-friendliness and food security.

As ingredients that are helpful to human body have been discovered through continued research, the development of processed products using insects such as cosmetics has gained steam.
