Chonbuk National University, Loas Alamos National Lab of the U.S., and Jeonbuk-do (North Jeolla Province) plan to found a joint research institute for the research in structural health of composite materials.

Chonbuk National University, Loas Alamos National Lab, and Jeonbuk signed an MOA on establishing a joint research institute at Jeonbuk Provincial Office on March 22nd and agreed to jointly develop technologies to manage structural health of eco-friendly composite materials.

To that end, Chonbuk National University and Loas Alamos National Lab will set up a joint research institute at the University this July with the investment of about KRW 2 billion, and Jeonbuk-do will provide subsidies for operational expenses by getting the plan selected as the government’s public project.

Especially, the research institute aims to develop core technologies in the field of managing structural health of composite materials and assessing reliability, whose goal is to detect defects in the structure of composite materials.

Loas Alamos National Lab, established to develop nuclear weapons in 1943, is an affiliated organization of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). The Lab carries out research in the safety of aircraft, wind power, atomic power plants, and bio-engineering with the annual budget of KRW 1.6 trillion and 9,000 employees.

Director Lee Gang-o of Parts and Materials Division of Jeonbuk said “an international joint research institute will boost the momentum for the project to create a carbon valley by promoting the composite materials-based aviation and wind power industries,” and added “if the research institute is selected as the government’s project to attract leading foreign research institutes, the subsidy will amount to KRW 3.6 billion for six years.”
