The Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MIFAFF) inked an investment memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Instantlabs and SunOpta in mid-December on the Iksan National Food Cluster Project.
The project is designed to establish a national industrial complex that specializes in food by attracting 160 food-related companies and research institutes with the total investment worth 553.5 billion won by 2015.
Founded in 1973, the Canada-based SunOpta produces eco-friendly organic food products including soybean milk and juice. Under the MOU, it will build production facilities for eco-friendly food and beverage in the national cluster by 2015.
Instantlabs, a U.S.-based food research institute, is located in the bio cluster partnering the University of Maryland. It is reported to be considering building its research center in the national cluster.
MIFAFF is also dicussing details with other food companies including Post Foods, Ralcorp Holdings Inc. and JBS.
