Buan County is promoting a project to foster new profitable crops from last year. The project selects four to five types of crops every year and support their production and distribution.
To improve the possibility of success, teams that can receive supports should be a cooperative unit or a union with a stipulated size that grows an appropriate type of crop for the region.
The county teaches advanced cultivation technology and supports maximum 50 percent of costs for seeds and facilities.
Those crops found effective are selected again for farmers to receive support, while new effective crops are added every year.
From the project, Buan made a profit of KRW 1.4 billion with garlic only last year.
The cultivation area this year increased to 109 ha with active participation from farmers, and income is expected to exceed KRW 4.4 billion.
Sales of salted cabbages are expected to be more than KRW 500 million this year.
Based on these achievements, Buan will select sorghum, pumpkin and water parsley to reinforce support.
A county official noted that the project was introduced to increase farmers’ income with crops alternative to rice and barely, adding that the county aims to foster about 5,000 farming households with incomes more than KRW 50 million.
