(1) Reasons for Proposal

Due to the growing consumption of home meal replacements, this Amendment aims to introduce hygiene management standards for boxed meals, a popular home meal replacement, therby ensuring the safety of food products available for the public.

(2) Major Provisions

A. Newly insert production and processing standards for boxed meals [2. 2. 24) to 26)]

1) There is a need to introduce production and processing standards to ensure that boxed meals are manufactured in a hygienic manner

2) Newly insert washing standards for vegetables and thawing standards for frozen seafood used in boxed meals

3) Lay the groundwork for supplying the people with safe food products by strengthening hygiene standards for boxed meals

(3) Amendment Details

Administrative Pre-announcement of Partial Amendment to the Food Standards and Specifications

Partially amend the Food Standards and Specifications as follows.

Newly insert 2. 2. 24) to 26) as follows.

24) Fruits and vegetables used in the production of boxed meals shall be sterilized by immersing in water containing 100 to 200 ppm sodium hypochlorite for not less than 10 minutes, or by any other method that is at least as effective, and then rinsed thoroughly with clean water.

25) Food placed inside boxed meal containers shall be quickly cooled at refrigeration temperature (not more than 25℃ in the case of rice) after cooking and then be transferred to the containers; provided that an exception may be made for products sold to consumers within 2 hours after cooking and rice that is separately packaged to avoid affecting the temperature of side dishes.

26) Where frozen seafood is thawed by immersion in water, it shall be thawed within 2 hours under running water of not more than 21℃.

Addenda

Article 1 (Enforcement Date) This Notice shall enter into force as of the date 6 months after notification.

Article 2 (Applicability) This Notice shall apply to foods that are produced, processed, or imported (based on shipping date) for the first time after the enforcement of this Notice

Article 3 (Interim Measures) Any matter that is undergoing inspection at the time of enforcement of this Notice after being produced, processed, sold, or imported shall comply with the former provisions.
