Amkor Korea Gwangju Office to Hire 500 More Workers by March

(GWANGJU=Yonhap News) The Korean Branch of Amkor Technology, the world's leading semiconductor packaging company, will additionally hire 500 employees for its Gwangju Office by March.




This will increase the total number of employees at the Gwangju Office to around 4,000.

Gwangju Metropolitan Government announced that Amkor Korea recently sold its business site in Seongsu-dong, Seoul and planned to relocate some of its facilities and employees to Songdo in Incheon and Gwangju.

The company's Songdo Office will serve as a R&D hub while Gwangju Office will be a manufacturing base.

Amkor Technology is listed on Nasdaq and headquartered in Tempe, Arizona, U.S.. It currently holds number two position in the semiconductor back-end and testing market.

The company operates 22 offices in 6 Asian countries including Korea.

Its annual sales revenue is around KRW 4 billion and the total number of employees is about 20,000. Amkor Korea generates sales of KRW 1.4 trillion annually, which accounts for about 35% of the company's total. Among them, sales from the Gwangju Office is about KRW 1 trillion. Around 90% of products manufactured in Gwangju are exported, contributing greatly to the Gwanju's economy.

Expansion of Amkor's Gwangju Office was helped by efforts of the City Mayor Yoon Jang-hyun, according to Gwangju City.

Mayor Yoon has visited the company for a number of times and met Park Yong-chul, President of Amkor Korea Headquarters, to request increase in investment.

He also has sent a letter asking expansion of facilities in Gwangju to the headquarters in the U.S..

"Sales generated from Amkor's Gwangju Office is expected to exceed KRW 1 billion as facilities and staff are transferred from Seoul," a Gwangju official said. "We hope business expansion of the company will greatly contribute to job creation, particularly for young job seekers, and regional economic development."
