According to Yonhap News,

(GWANGJU=Yonhap News) At the groundbreaking ceremony for an advanced water treatment facility on May 2 at the Yongyeon Water Treatment Plant in Dong-gu, the city of Gwangju announced that the new facility will provide a steady supply of clean and safe tap water.

The new advanced water treatment facility will be able to rid the water of geosmin and 2-Methylisoborneol (MIB), which cause the water to smell of dirt and mold, respectively, in hot weather or after a period of drought.

A total of KRW 49.9 billion, including KRW 34.9 billion from national funding, will be spent on building the facility, which is scheduled to finish in October 2019.

Realizing the need for a new advanced water treatment system in 2012, the city has gone through various designs, the latest of which has finally received approval of the Ministry of Environment earlier this year.
