According to Yonhap News,

(GWANGJU=Yonhap News) Gwangju announced May 22 that it has siged a memorandum of understanding to become sister cities with Yangchen in Jiangsu Province, China, the two cities agreeing to increase exchange and strengthen cooperation on medical, economic, trade, energy, automotive and other issues.

A seaside city with a population of some 8 million, Yangchen is an important economic center and automotive hub on China's eastern coast.

Around 1,000 Korean companies, including Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors, Hyundai Mobis and Hyundai Steel, are located in the industrial complex in the city.

The two cities first began talks when Gwangju Mayor Yoon Jang-hyeon was visiting Guangxhou in 2014, and further discussions took place in 2015 when a high-level official from Yengchen visited Gwangju in 2015.

Gwangju expects the new relationship will help propel Chonnam University's medical technology exchange project with Yangchen, as well as the city's own projects involving investment in an international hospital in the Chinese city.
