Gwangju to Globalize Mt. Mudeung Area Geopark

According to Yonhap News,

(GWANGJU=Yonhap News) On April 16, Gwangju City said it will work to raise awareness about geoparks, come up with a system for preservation and revitalize the Mudeung Mountain Area's regional economy, all as part of the city's efforts for globalization. Mudeung Mountain Area Geological Park officially became a certified UNESCO Global Geopark on April 12.

The city will also implement a five-part strategy which includes education and promotion program development, geo festival promotion and virtual reality development and storytelling, establishment of a global platform center for world geological parks, expansion of the exploration base and functional cooperation among organizations.

In July, members of UNESCO Global Geoparks and experts from Korea and abroad will come together for an international workshop as well as a ceremony to declare the vision of global geoparks.

At the ceremony, participants will discuss the comprehensive development plan of the Mudeung Mountain Area, including the General Assembly of the Asia-Pacific Geopark in 2023 and the General Meeting of the Global Geopark in 2030.

The city will also build a Mudeung Mountain Area UNESCO Global Geopark Platform Center and expand the exploration infrastructure.

The global platform center will house information on global geoparks and the Mudeung Mountain Area awe well as a global geopark pavilion, archive, communication center for education and exchange as well as an outdoor geo-playland.

On April 12, Mudeung Mountain Area Geopark became the 137th UNESCO Global Geopark and the third in Korea following Jeju and Cheongsong.
