Gwangju and Jeonnam recently recorded the highest exports of agricultural and fishery products in the first quarter.

Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corp. (aT) Gwangju Jeonnam Regional Headquarters reported the region's agricultural and fishery exports to have increased 22.4% YoY, reaching the highest first quarter total of USD 127.6 million.

The total far exceeds the national agricultural and fishery exports growth of 4.4% (exports USD 2.217 billion).

Looking at the top 10 export sectors, paprika exports to Japan, which increased in export volume and unit prices, jumped 142.7% to USD 25.7 million, up from USD 1.84 million in the same period last year.

Cabbage exports to China soared due to unstable supply and demand in Japan. Chinese cabbage exports totaled USD 2.376 million, up 418.3% from USD 568,000 in the same period last year.

The export volume of agricultural products exported to the U.S. grew 32.9% to USD 67 million.

The resumption of livestock and poultry exports, which had been suspended due to the Avian Influenza (AI), helped boost overall exports.

Livestock exports rose 26.9% to USD 18 million, while bird feathers grew 11% to USD 6 million.

Seafood exports, mainly to Thailand and the U.S., increased 13.1%, or USD 52.5 million, as demand for "seaweed snacks" and "seasoned seaweed" increased.
