Gwangju Gears Up to Become a Hub City for Hydrogen Cars

(GWANGJU=Yonhap News) Gwangju is gearing up to become a hub city for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

According to the city's announcement on June 22, the city is currently undergoing efforts to develop technology for and substantiate the localization of a hydrogen and electric vehicle fusion station.

In particular, Gwangju has decided to develop venture businesses and encourage private companies to invest by activating the supply of hydrogen electric vehicles.

Last year, the city supplied 41 hydrogen electric vehicles and in April of this year, it supply 54 such cars to civilians.

Those who purchase an electric hydrogen car will receive a total subsidy of USD 32.5 million, made up of KRW 22.5 million in national expenditure and KRW 10 million in municipal expenditure.

Depending on additional demand, the city plans to supply an additional 100 vehicles in the seond half of this year.

Gwangju City also plans to increase the number of chargers from 2 to 7 by next year and 14 by 2022.

It also plans to supply 5,000 hydrogen electric cars.

If Gwangju succeeds in obtaining the most charging infrastructure in the nation, it plans to conduct various R&D projects centered around hydrogen fuel.

From June 28 to July 15, the city will operate the "Hydrogen Electric House with NEXO," sponsored by Hyundai Motors, at the Kim Dae-joong Convention Center.

Visitors can learn about the energy principle of hydrogen electric vehicles and experience what a hydrogen fuel-powered future society will be like at the 230㎡ sized house.
