According to Yonhap News,

(GWANGJU=Yonhap News) Gwangju City announced on August 14 that a road connecting Woljeon-dong and Mujin-ro will be established by 2022 to relieve traffic in chronically congested area near Gwangju Songjeong Station.

According to the City, the road establishment is a project planned to reduce traffic congestion that has become heavier since the launch of the KTX in 2015, in conjunction with the Third Improvement Project of Conjested Roads in Metropolitan Area of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The project will be implemented in 6.25 km road, starting from Songjeong 1 Gyo, Pyeong-dong, Gwangsan-gu through Dosan Elementary school and Gwangju Airport to Mujin-ro.

The existing road of 2.74 km will be used and a 3.51 km long road with 4 to 6 lanes will be newly built.

In addition, the chronically congested Sangmu Junction where Mujin-ro and Imbangul-ro meet will be extended with one or two additional lanes.

At the moment, people take the bypass around the Yeongsangang River, but the project will connect Imbanul-ro straight to the Gwangju Airport to minimize inconvenience.

In particular, the 800 m long road between Mujin-ro and Usan-dong flower complex which leads to the World Championships Village of FINA World Championship Gwangju 2019, is expected to open by June next year, before the athletes move into the Village.

Gwangju-si finished its design in May last year after going through design oursourcing and the review with the feedback from the residents.

Once the budget arrangement with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Economy and Finance is finished, it aims to put order in the second half of this year and finish the project by 2022.

"When this road is opened, the traffic flow around Gwangju Songjeong Station will be improved due to the dispersion of the vehicles going out to the suburbs like Naju," said Yang Yeong-sik, Director of Road Division, Gwanju City Hall, and added "We are expecting to mitigate inconvenience of the residents by connecting Imbangul-daero with the Airport and expand the Sangmu Junction which is chronically congested."
