According to Yonhap News,

(GWANGJU=Yonhap News) Nam-gu district of Gwangju City announced on September 18 that its 17 villages in Daechon-dong will become energy independent.

The district won the project by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and secured a total budget of KRW 970 million.

New and renewable energy facilities using sunlight and geothermal heat will be installed starting from next January.

Daechon-dong is in the rural area where gas is not supplied.

It is expected to reduce fuel cost for heating and cooling and ensure stable supply of energy.

The energy independent village will be expanded to Songam-dong and Hyodeok-dong following Daechon-dong.

"We will try to make the whole district energy independent," said an official from the district.
