Conference on “Digital Technology and the Future of Culture City” to be Held in Gwangju

(GWANGJU=Yonhap News) The 2018 Asia Culture Forum will take place between October 31 and November 2 at the International Conference Room of the Asia Culture Center (ACC). The forum is organized by the Gwangju Metropolitan City and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and implemented by the Industry Foundation of Chonnam University.

The Asia Culture Forum started in 2006 to reinforce cultural solidarity among Asian countries and promote creative discourses on Asian cultures to stay abreast with technological advancements and social changes. The forum celebrates its 12th anniversary this year.

The 2018 forum, which will be held under the theme “Culture, Technology and Creativity: Digital Technology and the Future of Culture City,” invites culture and art researchers and artists to Gwangju for presentations and discussions on a wide range of topics.

Roh Soh-yeong, Director of the Art Center Nabi, will deliver a keynote speech on “Neotopia—Technology and Humanity” as a representative of the Korean digital art community.

Director Roh also serves as the director of the 2019 International Symposium on Electronic Art (2019 ISEA) that will be held in Gwangju in June 2019, which is one of the most prestigious international academic conferences on media art.

The keynote speech will be followed by Sessions I and II, where participants will discuss and debate on the respective subtopics, particularly “Asian Cultural Hub City Development Project” and “Digital Technology and Future Cities.”

The discussion will continue on Day 2 of the forum in Session III, “Digital Art and Sustainable Cities,” and Session IV, “Digital Technology and Humanities Convergence.”

Moon Byeongjae, Director General of the Culture City Policy Division of the Gwangju Metropolitan City said, “The Asia Culture Forum will provide a venue where culture and art experts could pool their experiences and wisdom to shed light on the future direction of the Asian Cultural Hub City Development Project.” He also said, “We will turn Gwangju into a city of communication and networking to share the values of Asian cultures.”
