(GWANGJU=Yonhap News) The Gwangju City Office of Education promotes an educational exchange with the Montpellier Education Office in France.

According to the Gwangju City Office of Education on December 24, the City has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Montpellier Office of Education, France, effective for three years.

The Gwangju Superintendent of Education was invited to Montpellier, and the two cities discussed plans for educational exchange programs.

The two cities have agreed to cooperate in exchanges of students and teachers in fields such as history, coding, language and arts education.

Teacher exchanges will take the form of a one-week visit program.

8 French teachers will visit Gwangju in the first half of next year, followed by 8 teachers from Gwangju to Montpellier in the second half of next year.

According to Gwangju's Superintendent of Education, international exchange is important for students' communication skills and problem solving abilities in the age of fourth industrial revolution.

The Montpellier Superintendent of Education noted, "The French government hopes that about 50 percent of all students will participate in an international exchange program." She added, "Montpellier is currently in contact with countries speaking 10 different languages. With Gwangju, it will be in relations with countries speaking 11 different languages."

Gwangju invited five people to visit the city next year, and the Montpellier Superintendent accepted the invitation.
