On May 20, Gwangju city held a session to report on "establishment of a master plan for cultural village," stating a plan to turn Dongmyeong-dong area into a cultural village showing Gwangju's history, culture, and commerce.

Dongmyeong-dong area is a mixture of high-end detached houses such as official residents and public offices, and traditional Korean Hanok had been depressed due to donuts phenomenon of old down-town, but has gained new vitality as old houses renovated to cafe, restaurant, and cultural places.

However, an issue has been raised that the street is not well-organized and facilities are inconvenient.

Gwangju city plans to change residential areas of the modern times into streets specialized in food, accommodation, and workshops, among others.

Pedestrians and roads will be separated, and turned into streets for walk in connection with public design projects.

Dongmyeong-dong area will be developed as a walking tour course by connecting with places near Asia Culture Center that show history, people, and ecological culture of old towns.
