According to Yonhap News,

(GWANGJU=Yonhap News) On June 10, Gwangju city announced that it was selected as "Redox Flow Battery (RFB) certification center project" by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE).

RFB is a type of electrochemical cell where chemical energy is provided by two chemical components dissolved in liquids contained within the system and separated by a membrane. Ion exchange (accompanied by flow of electric current) occurs through the membrane while both liquids circulate in their own respective space.

It has technical advantages over conventional rechargeables, such as potentially separable liquid tanks and near unlimited longevity and no risk of fire.

The project is to be run by Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KREI), and participated by Gwangju city, Jeonnam Univeristy, Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) and Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI), among others.

The contents of the project include: system technology development; establishment of a center; cultivation of experts; certification project; creation of global network; and support for companies.

The city is to invest KRW 2.5 billion (national budget 8 billion won, municipal budget 14.6 billion won, and private capital of 2.4 billion won) during 2019-2022 in building a RFB testing and certification center (2,250 square meters building site) on 10,000 square meter site secured for KREI's 2nd phase project in Urban High-Tech Industrial Complex in Namgu.

The city expects that the project is to create more than 500 jobs through expansion of ICT infrastructure and relocation of related companies.
