Gwangju City and local related industries joined forces for Gwangju's 11 leading industries.
On August 15, Gwangju City signed MOU with 12 related organizations including Korea Photonics Technology Institute, Korea Institute of Industrial Technology on "Continuous R&D support for leading industries".
The MOU was pursed based on shared understanding that comprehensive support connecting companies and local R&D institutes is required to turn the city's vision for future industry and plan for leading industries into reality.
Main contents included are: designation of in-charge organizations per leading industry; establishing performance management system; joint usage of R&D equipment; establishment of problem-solving system; revising relevant ordinance; and support for outstanding companies.
At a time when the need for stronger industrial competitiveness emerged due to Japan's export bans and expedited technology transition due to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, it is meaningful to lay the foundation to support future industries such as AI, big data, and hydrogen economy.
Based on the MOU, the city encourages related organizations to participate in research and planning phases, select appropriate project right for demand on site, and promote commercialization.
The city announced the vision for future industries and strategies to foster 11 leading industries in May, concentrated on building a result-oriented R&D system translating research outcomes from related organizations into company's sales.
A city official said, "We will strengthen competitiveness of the manufacturing industries by enhancing R&D in core industries including AI, energy, and air so that we can turn a crisis of the local industries into an opportunity."
