Gwangju, Oct. 28 (Yonhap) -- Gwangju World Kimchi Festival Ends in Success - Export Deals Worth USD 1.1 million Reached

The 26th Gwangju World Kimchi Festival hosted for three days from Oct. 25-27 in Gwangju Kimchi Town was concluded in great success by attracting more than 50,000 visitors and by enabling the signing of export contracts worth USD 1.1 million.

The Festival was joined by previous winners of Presidential awards, local kimchi makers, Suncheon Agricultural Cooperative and Hwawon Agricultural Cooperative in Haenam and succeeded in selling 30 tons (worth KRW 300 million) of kimchi on-site.

An event invited visitors to taste Gwangju's local kimchi, kimchi made following the recipe of ancestors who resided in Gwangju during Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392) and other traditional menus. Especially popular was the event introducing the kimchi of Goryeo people, which drew more than 6,000 participants.

The newly opened Kimchi Fermented Food Center showcased fermented foods made by the masters around the country and drew people’s attention. Also popular was a special lecture by Buddhist monk Jeonggwang of Baegyangsa Temple who shared recipes enjoyed in Buddhist temples. At the Korea Kimchi Contest, Korea's only cooking festival that gives Presidential awards, Jang Gyeong-ae (from Yeosu, Jeonnam) won the Presidential Award. The Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Award went to Choi Mi-suk (from Seoul), and Lee Hye-ran (from Seoul) was granted with the Minister of Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award.

Gwangju's kimchi maker Trechan signed an export deal worth USD 1.1 million with three partners including Ultari USA. Ultari USA plans to launch kimchi made in Gwangju on the online shopping platform Amazon.com to target Koreans residing in the United States.

Onggi (clay pot) lanterns, clay pot guest books and large-sized LED clay pot cafe that were showcased for the first time this year were also well-received by visitors.

In make-your-own kimchi event, more than 1,000 visitors participated by applying online or on-site. Followed by the Kimchi Festival, Gwangju Kimchi Town will host "Bitgoeul Sarangnanum Kimchi Making Event" from Dec. 18-22. "We are grateful for the visitors and participants who have attended the event despite the cold weather," said Son Gyeong-jong, the chief of Strategic Industry Bureau of Gwangju City. "More diverse programs will be prepared for the next year's festival," he added.
