Gwangju City unveiled a biz- support plan to help optical industry

The city of Gwangju announced on May 6 that the local authorities’ project to support local businesses producing optical instruments and photographic lenses was selected as part of national open contests of “2021 smart project to build out the technology base” led by Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The project helps form a business hub to advance optical technology which even includes lenses applicable to self-driving cars.
With a KRW 16.3 billion worth of investment (including national budget of KRW 7.8 billion), the city will push for this three- year project for the period from 2021 through 2023, building out the industry base for manufacturing, designing, inspection and operation.
Korea Photonics Technology Institute, Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, Chonnam Univ and several others engaged work together for the project aiming to explore local hidden champions and startups, while showcasing innovations.The project is anticipated to raise KRW 200 billion in sales and hire 1,400 employees.
