Coupang, the largest online retailer in Korea, unveiled its plan to establish a logistics center, believed to add nearly 2,000 new jobs in Gwangju city. The city and the E-commerce giant signed an investment MOU on Sep 4 for the new facility, a move to help create jobs and make the local economy further invigorated under the state-led “Gwangju job creation new deal”.

Coupang also unfolded the details of the masterplan to build a KRW 224 billion worth of a logistics hub that will nestle into a 174,000 ㎡ site within the 3rd Pyeongdong industry cluster, which boasts the largest scale in Jeolla Province. The first phase of the construction process that has already begun last year comes to an end and starts operation in the second half of next year to open a warehouse to store fresh foods to be delivered in a 14, 000㎡ site.

For the second phase to add a high-tech logistics center established on a 159,000㎡ site, the online retailer struck a land purchase and residency deal on Aug 31. The project breaks ground next spring to put and end by the year of 2023. It’s reported that the cost for the first and the second projects total KRW 24 billion and KRW 200 billion each. The city predicts that the investment could bring nearly 2,000 new jobs into the community, the largest ever.
