Gwangju city celebrated the 50th MOU signing with an AI tech-developer

The city of Gwangju, setting a new path toward forming a hub of artificial intelligence technologies, appears to a step closer to its goal on the back of concerted efforts the city has made so far with private-public entities. Nearly 50 research institutions and enterprises have formed partnership and a handful of them have already moved part of its business and operating facilities into the city.

The most recent partnership deal was struck by a new counterpart, GI Lab, under the shared objective to build-up tech base to facilitate an AI ecosystem with the city. This marks the 50th MOU signing ceremony since the city government has started to reach a deal with Encored Technologies for the first time on Oct last year.

GI Lab the very first joint venture firm, born under industry-academia sponsorship program to make a concrete form of the government-led initiative, called Gwangju business model. They’ve already reached partnership with Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, Jeonnam University and AI specialists who transferred research data and technologies for novel applications.

At the agreement signing ceremony, a congratulatory message to commemorate the 50th MOU the city has struck so far (with 43 businesses and seven government institutions) was delivered to all participants. Gwangju city reaffirmed its goal to attract over 300 tech companies into the city to add nearly 1,000 new jobs locally by the end of 2024, the very first stage to build out tech-base to accommodate AI hub.
