The city of Gwangju and Leipzig in Germany agreed to work together to reach carbon neutrality. City mayor hosted a video conferencing to have an hour dialogue with his counterparts, Murkhard Jung, Mayor of Leipzig on Dec 3. Both shared insights over the latest agenda such as COVID-19 containment measures and Korea’s Green New Deal.

The Mayor of Gwangju city said “Setting up a city-wide net-zero emission target by 2045, Gwangju has been pushing ahead with AI tech-based Green New Deal, an environmental initiative to keep the economy sustainable”, adding that “It would be very appreciated if member states, spearheading a campaign on climate change across the European Union, share their now-how and expertise to slash greenhouse gas emissions discharged in the air.” The Mayor also requested sponsorship from Leipzig city for the 11th World Human Rights Cities Forum set to be held next year, delivering a session named “ROK- Germany human rights conference”, newly inserted for the annual conference.

Leipzig city mayor relied “We do hope a bilateral cooperation between two cities in Korea and Germany can result in a positive synergy effect. It would be our great pleasure to further solidify our alliance as champions of human rights and democracy.” Both cities have formed cooperative relationship since 2012 and started exchange programs since then.
