According to Yonhap News,

The city of Gwangju, which has long been putting much emphasis on facilitating the city-wide AI ecosystem, appears to gain momentum on the back of the government’s recent announcement of the budget allocation plan for the year 2021. According to the city government, 7 out of 11 legislative bills were passed this time to address a handful of municipal issues, which allowed the city to secure nearly KRW 80 billion, a 14.8% jump from a year earlier. Specifically, roughly KRW 64.5 billion will go to the city initiative to form a local AI tech-cluster, KRW 2 billion to support the city’s graduate school of artificial programs and KRW 7 billion to establish a testing ground for AI product demonstration.

By launching a special committee which consists of the municipal authorities, research centers, colleges and private companies, Gwangju city has set up a plan to collect next year’s budgets. Gwangju city has signed partnership MOUs with 55 research institutes and developers this year alone. 33 of them have opened offices in the city, adding 140 new jobs. Launching services of AI support center or the youth employment program (YEP), the city has helped 35 companies resettle into the city district, raising a KRW 100 billion worth of funds for AI research work so far.
