According to Yonhap News,

The establishment of the national data center, which heralds a new dawn for the age of artificial intelligence, will be fully underway in the city of Gwangju. The city government hosted an investment MOU signing and business launch ceremonies on Feb 4.

In celebration of the event, President Moon Jae-in and the ICT minister delivered a video message congratulating the ceremonies. Presentation sessions by the city mayor, followed by NHN’s vision statement took place. NHN signed a KRW 210 billion worth of investment contract with the city authorities and a TF to push for the project over the center establishment. Right after the event programs, there was a signboard hanging ceremony of the grad-school of artificial intelligence studies at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology.

With nearly KRW 300 billion budgets, the data center is scheduled to be built up inside the 3rd industry complex in Gwangju city, where the construction project to establish an AI cluster is currently in progress, by the end of 2023.

By forming a computer system capable of operating at a peak processing rate of 88.5PF with a storage capacity of 107PF, the center will support multiple research projects across labs, businesses, universities and R&D institutes. Petaflops is a unit of measurement used for measuring the performance of a processor's floating point unit, or FPU. Since FLOPS stands for "Floating Point Operations Per Second," the term "petaflops" may be either singular (one petaflops) or plural (two or more petaflops), which means 88.5 PF is equal to 88,500, 000,000,000,000 flops.
