According to Yonhap News,

As the medical healthcare industry gradually grows in size in Gwangju, it is establishing itself as a next-generation strategic industry.

Gwangju-si said on October 4 that 519 companies were established in Gwangju, employing 4,525 people and recording sales of KRW 1.82.8 trillion last year.

Gwangju-si said that the industry recorded an average growth rate of 18.4% over the past three years.

Starting with the Titanium Special Alloy Center in Gwangju Technopark in 2002, the industry has expanded to include dentistry, biotechnology, orthopedic surgery, COS Medicare, ophthalmology, dementia, and micro-medical robots.

Since 2014, Gwangju-si selected and fostered the biomedical material parts as a regional main industry, and expanded support, which had previously focused on implant-centered metals, into polymers, ceramics, and silicon.

It also provides full-cycle support from product development to clinical application at universities, hospitals, research centers, and companies.

Gwangju-si also plans to intensively foster the micro medical robot industry and the establishment of commercialization platform to develop smart medical device based on artificial intelligence.

The city presented a plan to foster 2,000 companies, achieve sales of KRW 2.3 trillion, and employ 9,000 people by 2030, by supporting dementia/the elderly friendly industries and cosmetics.
