According to Yonhap News,

The government is to push for a strategy that spreads AI-based innovation drive nationwide for revitalization of local economy.

It is to upgrade AI cluster, which is being built in Gwangju, as a 'national AI innovation base' and go ahead with a large-scale project that integrates AI and main regional industries based on the characteristics and strengths of each region.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that 'direction for regional expansion of artificial intelligence' was confirmed jointly by 17 cities and provinces, and related ministries at the 25th 4th Industrial Revolution Committee meeting held on November 28.

The three major strategies of this plan are ▲ upgrading the Gwangju AI cluster as a national AI innovation base ▲ planning large-scale projects based on regional characteristics and strengths as a leading project ▲ expanding convergence of AI and regional main industries for specialized convergence.

The Honam region will expand its infrastructure including data centers and demonstration equipment, currently under construction, so that it can develop into an advanced national AI innovation base. It will become a one-stop development base for AI products and services by linking large-scale data such as data dams and the cloud. As for a specialized convergence task, it will develop a convergence model of AI with new and renewable energy, agri-food manufacturing and processing, among others.

The Chungcheong region has set large-scale AI convergence technology R&D, utilizing its rich research base, as the direction of a leading project, and will push for creation of oepn research environment and convergence research. As for specialized convergence tasks, it selected AI convergence, such as the development and demonstration of AI for autonomous vehicles, and analysis of new drug candidates in the bio field.

The Yeongnam region, as a cluster of manufacturing industries, will go ahed with a project aiming to build Mega-regional logistics and manufacturing convergence cluster. It will support digitalization of aged industrial complexes and factories by applying AI and intelligent robots to the entire logistics process as its leading projects. As for the specialized convergence task, it plans to develop optimal production management of the manufacturing industry and AI services in the urban safety field.

The Gangwon region will embark on dissemination of digital innovation services centered on health and medical data. As leading projects, it will create an environment for safe processing and utilization of data, and develop innovative services for residents in remote areas. It plans to pursue AI convergence in digital tourism services and production and management of environment-friendly energy.

The Jeju region has determined the creation of an ecosystem for demonstration of new AI services as the direction for leading projects. Accordingly, it will create an environment for demonstration of new AI technologies developed across the country and develop digital public services to resolve pending local issues. It will also converge AI with customized tourism services and growth management of winter crops.

The government is to support institutional improvement so that the metropolitan area can develop into a launchpad for globalization of artificial intelligence led by the private sector. As for specialized convergence tasks, Gyeonggi and Incheon are going to apply AI to bio and media fields.
