Gwangju's photonics industry has shown a significant growth momentum, surpassing the KRW 3 trillion mark in sales.

Gwangju-si said on February 2 that the photonics industry in Gwangju recorded KRW 3.1454 trillion in 2020, increasing 15.7% from the prior year.

The industry employed 8,128 people, up 1.0% from a year ago. The number of companies was 305, increasing 2.7% from the previous year.

29 companies achieved more than KRW 10 billion in sales, while 6 were listed in KOSDAQ and KONEX, and 2 in 'World Class 300'.

In particular, companies engaged in the COVID-19 field, producing infrared camera and phonotics sensors for temperature measurement, among others, have recorded especially high growth in sales.

The photonics industry has been fostered as Gwangju's strategic industry since 2000, and taken root as a leading regional industry through rapid growth.

The city is fostering the photonics industry through: development of core key part technologies; establishment of fostering strategy; revision of ordinance; attracting a dedicated research institute (Korea Photonics Technology Institute)l and the organization in charge of industry promotion (Korea Association for Photonics Industry Development).
