According to Newsis,

Gwangju Metropolitan City will host a base center to lead the industrial ecosystem of the advanced optics materials and parts.

Korea Photonics Technology Institute is to hold a groundbreaking ceremony on February 11 for 'Optical Materials Industry Support Base Center' which will support self-reliance of optical materials and parts for camera lens, which used to be totally dependent on imports.

Optical Materials Industry Support Base Center, scheduled to commence construction in July, is to be built through 'optical materials industrialization support project', which was supported by the MOTIE and Gwangju-si.

Korean companies are leaders in the global camera module market. However, they are reliant on imports of the optical materials for camera lens.

The global market of visible light, infrared, ultraviolet, and polycrystalline ceramics materials are all occupied by advanced countries including Japan, Germany, and US.

When the Center is constructed, the Korea Photonics Technology Institute will play a role as a hub for development of key technologies of the optical materials and support for companies.

It will promote self-reliance of technology through development of high value-added key optical materials development utilized in autonomous vehicles, space, defense, and semiconductor sectors.

It also is planned to provide full-cycle support for companies by building visible light, infrared, ceramic materials, and characteristics & reliability test equipment.

By doing so, it plans to discover 5 star products, foster 3 hidden champions, achieve KRW 200 billion in sales, and hire 1,400 people.
