According to Yonhap News,

City of Gwangju officially announced that it will lift the height restrictions on 40-story commercial buildings and 30-story residential buildings.

The city made an administrative notice on May 11 to terminate the operation of the height management principle of buildings that put into effect in July 2021.

This is a follow-up to the urban landscape and building design improvement plan announced in February.

By lifting the uniform standard of building height, Gwangju plans to build skylines and develop urban and building designs fitting Gwangju's unique traits.

The grace period on it will last until May 31.

Head of Gwangju Urban Designe Department Choi Won-suk said. "So far, the only factor building constructor should consider has been the building height restriction that required monotonous and uniform building styles, but by lifting the regulations we will make sure other factors such as harmony with surroundings and view-obstruction problems caused by high-rising buildings should be taken into consideration when new building are constructed."
