According to Yonhap News,

Gwangju-si signed an MOU with the World Korean Food Federation at the City Hall on August 12, in order to cooperate in the expansion of Gwangju's kimchi and foods overseas.

World Korean Food Federation is a consultative body of Korean restaurants in 29 cities of 18 countries, committed to the globalization of Korean food, including joint purchase of Korean ingredients and promotion.

The city and the federation plan to connect overseas Korean restaurants and specialty stores to sell and supply Gwangju kimchi, and conduct promotional activities for Gwangju kimchi and kimchi festivals in overseas Korean events.

To raise the competitiveness of the kimchi industry, Gwangju-si holds a Korean kimchi contest jointly with the World Institute of Kimchi, the only kimchi-specialized institution in Korea, with supporting logistical fees and production costs of kimjang kimhi and certification of traditional foods.

Last year, 12,000 people participated in the Bitgoeul Kimjang (kimchi making and sharing), selling 218 tons of kimchi (about KRW 1.47 billion), while the 30th Gwangju Kimchi Festival held last year was also highly acclaimed.

Gwangju's mayor said, "let's work together to make kimchi of Gwangju, the birthplace of kimchi, expand in the world."
