According to Yonhap News,

The only VCA Partner of TSMC, the world's largest foundry company (a semiconductor manufacturer that makes chips for other companies), will join in the creation of AI industry ecosystem in Gwangju with local universities.

Gwangju City, Chonnam National University, Chosun University, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), and ASICLAND signed an MOU to create an ecosystem of AI and semiconductor industries at Gwangju City Hall September 25.

ASICLAND is the only VCA partner in Korea with the highest level of collaboration with TSMC.

In collaboration with local universities, the company will be operating a semiconductor expert training program and establish its R&D Center in Gwangju, hiring more than 100 local talents over the next six years.

Gwangju-si highlighted that it is the first time to attract a fabless company in the region, allowing it to build a cooperative system for talent training and employment support with local universities.

Chosun University was selected for the science and technology innovation talent training project by the Ministry of Science and ICT this year, while Chonnam National University established the first AI convergence university in Korea in 2019, followed by the opening of a graduate school of data science in 2021.

GIST has established an education system that encompasses all areas of advanced semiconductor packaging, led by its semiconductor engineering department.

Gwangju's mayor said, "with attracting ASICLAND, we have completed the ecosystem of the semiconductor industry."
