According to Yonhap News,

(Jeonnam-Gwangju=Yonhap News) Reporter Jang Deok-jong = Kimchi produced in Jeonnam-Gwangju is heading for export markets in the United States and the United Kingdom.

According to Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City on the 3rd, three local enterprises—Bitgoeul Kimchi Agricultural Corporation, Haedamchon, and Dasanmyeongga—exported a total of 1.5 tons (valued at approximately USD 10,000) of napa cabbage kimchi, leaf mustard kimchi (gat-kimchi), and aged kimchi (mukeunji) to Los Angeles (LA), U.S., on the same day.

The export price per kilogram stood at KRW 7,000 (USD 5.25) for napa cabbage kimchi, KRW 9,000 (USD 6.75) for leaf mustard kimchi, and KRW 9,000 (USD 6.75) for aged kimchi, commanding relatively higher unit prices than standard kimchi and proving their competitiveness in the local premium market.

The city has maintained continuous kimchi exports centered on Los Angeles, U.S., since 2022 in collaboration with the World Institute of Kimchi and the Federation of Korean Food Globalization.

Next month, the city plans to export kimchi to the UK as well, and on the 21st of the same month, it will host the 'Gwangju Fresh Gimjang Kimchi Tasting Event' at the University of Oxford in the UK.

Oh Young-geol, Director General of the Economy and Startup Bureau of Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City, said, "Jeonnam-Gwangju kimchi boasts high quality and distinctive flavors through traditional Jeolla-do style fermentation methods," adding, "Using Los Angeles as a foothold, we will expand our market across the Americas and actively tap into European markets such as the UK to boost our global competitiveness."
