Gwangju International Patient Care Association and the Gwangju Convention and Visitors Bureau signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for cooperation to attract foreign medical tourists.

According to the Gwangju International Patient Care Association (GIPCA) Thursday, two parties signed a memorandum of understanding Wednesday to cooperate for international events and attract foreign tourists.

The medical tourism industry creates high-added values two to three times more than the manufacturing industry does, leading to expectations for synergy from cooperation between the two agencies.

Established in 2007, the Gwangju Convention and Visitors Bureau is a marketing agency that builds a network with domestic and international agencies, attract and support international meetings and tourists and support international cooperation projects.

GIPCA, which has 16 hospitals including Chonnam University, Chonnam National University Hwasun Hospital and Chosun University Hospital as members, is working on building an academy-industry-research institute-government cooperation network and penetrating international medical markets.

An insider from the GIPCA noted that Chonnam National University Hwasun Hospital ranked 1st in attracting foreign patients despite disadvantaged geographical conditions compared to capital area, adding that the association will cooperate with the bureau to attract more patients as Gwangju has huge growth potential with outstanding medical and tourism resources and a close location to China.
