The Gwangju World Kimchi Culture Festival, held in Gwangju last week under the theme of Let’s Jump & Fly! Say Kimchi!, was ended in a success Wednesday.

At this year’s contest to find the best Kimchi master, 19 finalists competed against each other. Seo Chan-yeol, who made white kimchi with fermented soy and cabbage, won the President’s Award.

Kim hye-suk and Park Young-hee won the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) and the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA), respectively and Lee Mi-ja and Jung Ji-young won the Gwangju mayor’s awards.

The festival also contributed to globalization and commercialization of Kimchi.

Gwnagju also signed an export contract of USD 270,000 Tuesday to export Kimchi to Japan.

A program for foreigners to experience Kimchi drew about 500 foreigners, and the Global Friendship Tour, consisting of 120 foreign students from 50 countries around the world in Korea, also visited the festival.

The closing ceremony features performances to promote re-takeoff of the Kimchi Fesitval, which celebrated 20th anniversary.
