The world is faced to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions due to the fear of global warming and depletion of fossil fuels.

Global warming increased the temperature of the Earth by 0.5 compared to the end of the 19th century.

For this reason, many countries in the world strive to develop eco-friendly cars by adjusting the carbon dioxide emissions.

The eco-friendly cars are gradually becoming the center of automobile industry to enhance the universal values of people. The most promising cars are green cars including clean diesel cars, electric cars and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Clean diesel cars use fossil fuel and the efficiency increases 30% higher than gasoline vehicles. The pollutants exhausted from clean diesel vehicles have similar levels with hybrid cars and natural gas vehicles.

An electric car, an automobile that is propelled by electric motors, uses electrical energy stored in batteries and energy inverters rather than engines. Electric cars are better than conventional cars as they reduce the air pollution significantly and lowers the maintenance cost by 20%.

Fuel cells in vehicles create electricity to power an electric motor with high efficiency using oxygen from the air and hydrogen, which emits few pollutants.

Gwangju and the Ministry of Trade, Industries and Energy have invested a total of KRW 187.1 billion in the clean diesel core part industry development project to develop eco-friendly automobiles since 2011.

For this project, Gwangju has invested KRW 42.3 billion to equip 44 kinds of equipments related to clean diesel research and development (R&D) such as medium and large engine driving power facilities. They have also invested KRW 88.9 billion in 21 projects of six R&D areas including the development of high efficiency 8-speed automatic gearbox for clean diesel vehicles. The City is building a three-story technology development center (25,750 m²) that will be completed in March, 2014.

Particularly, the City enacted the Ordinance on the support of the electric car distribution project for the first time in Korea in 2011. Gwangju was designated as a leading electric car city by the Ministry of Environment. Gwangju has the environment to carry out the electric car distribution project and has distributed 61 cars to the private sector and public institutions last year. In addition, the City was engaged in the project more actively than other cities and provinces by constructing 65 charging infrastructures.

The City is promoting the distribution of 75 electric cars and charging infrastructures this year and 33 electric cars will be supplied to the private sector and public institutions during the first half of the year. Also, the City will build high speed charging infrastructures at parking lots in order for citizens to drive electric cars conveniently. Gwangju is the first Korean city to have five hydrogen fuel cell vehicles on the road since the "World Hydrogen Energy Conference." The City will secure 15 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and begin operating the charging infrastructure by purchasing 10 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles late of the year.

Also, Gwangju City signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Environment and Hyundai Motors Co. to foster eco-friendly automobile industry and agreed to cooperate on the R&D and distribution of clean diesel cars, electric cars, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and related infrastructures construction.

Gwangju's plan to produce 1 million cars will be achieved by developing green cars including clean diesel cars, electric cars and hydrogen fuel cell cars.

Particularly, the domestic automobile production industry is slowing down and the government should recognize that the industries linked to automobile industry have great influences on the national economy. The government needs to implement a long-term policy to develop eco-friendly cars since the future of Korean industries depends on the development of eco-friendly cars.
