In the 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade to be held in July next year, the countries in disputes will be invited and the first single inter-Korean sports team will be organized.

According to the City of Gwangju, the sports teams from seven countries, that are currently involved in disputes including Sudan, South Sudan, Israel, Syria, Palestine, Azerbaijan and Armenia will be invited to the Universiade. This is to make the Universiade a place of reconciliation and promote world peace.

The idea to form a single South-North team showed green light, which the City has strived since last year. The City has discussed this issue with diverse channels including UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and Mr. Wilfried Lemke, the UN Secretary General's Special Advisor on Sports for Development and Peace. Gwangju decided to reinforce the two-track strategy for the single South-North team such as consolidating the cooperation with UN and building cooperation system with the government.

The City said that the possibility of creating a single team is getting higher. Recently, North Korea informed that it would send their teams to the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon and also agreed to hold another round of reunion event for the separated families.

The two Koreas have not been together as one team at any major international events. However, they have marched together at the opening ceremonies of the 2000 2004 Summer Olympics in Sydney and Athens, respectively. A joint team of South and North Korean players entered the World Table Tennis Championships in Japan for the first time in 1991.
